Paediatric and respiratory physiotherapy

Our team of physiotherapists specialising in paediatrics helps your child with any alteration or difficulty that may appear as they grow, from their first days up to 18 years of age.

We support the child's motor and functional development.

We have specialised physiotherapists

At Bmum we have specialised physiotherapists who apply the techniques used to drain and mobilise secretions. These techniques are painless, have no side effects, and can considerably reduce the doses of some drug treatments.

They have an important secretion-draining effect, reducing the risk of infections and bronchopulmonary complications such as bronchiolitis. We will also give you guidance on nasal washes, suctioning secretions and administering aerosol therapy if needed.

Types of physiotherapy

Neurodevelopment

In the physiotherapy area we assess and support the child’s motor development in the first years of life: head control, rolling over, crawling, first steps…

We help you with treatment and give you individualised guidance adapted to your child’s needs at each moment.

Respiratory physiotherapy

When winter arrives, so do runny noses and the dreaded bronchiolitis, bronchitis and other respiratory conditions. An important factor in your baby’s wellbeing, and in the proper course of the illness, is being able to breathe well. A congested nose will keep them from eating, sleeping, resting…

Respiratory physiotherapy consists of a series of non-invasive techniques that help your baby expel mucus.

Digestive alterations

Improving your baby’s symptoms and reducing crying is possible. Using manual therapy and osteopathy techniques, our team will help you with conditions such as infant colic, wind, infant dyschezia or any other gastrointestinal discomfort. They will also give you guidance so you can support the process from home.

Cranial deformities

Sometimes we notice that one side of the back of a baby’s head is a little flat. This is what we know as plagiocephaly. Our physiotherapists will help improve this condition through techniques applied in clinic and advice and exercises to do at home.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapy

We help you treat conditions such as congenital muscular torticollis, obstetric brachial palsy, hip dysplasia and spinal alterations such as scoliosis or kyphosis.

Breastfeeding

Our team of physiotherapists, integrated into the Breastfeeding Unit together with midwives and paediatricians, will help you with any latch difficulty so that feeding is effective and pain-free. They are also involved in post-frenectomy treatment when needed.

Babywearing

If you are not sure which carrier best suits your needs, which is the most ergonomic for you and your baby, or how to babywear correctly, our physiotherapists specialising in babywearing can help you.

Which conditions does paediatric physiotherapy help with?

Why is it important?

Paediatric physiotherapy supports the child’s motor and functional development from the first months of life. At Bmum we work in a respectful, specialised way to treat movement alterations, foster proper motor development and improve the quality of life of the child and their family.

Support through growth

Paediatric respiratory physiotherapy focuses on helping improve breathing and mobilising the secretions that build up in the airways. It is especially useful in the respiratory illnesses common in childhood, always using gentle, adapted techniques.

It can be applied from very young babies to older children, always adjusting the techniques to each child’s age, clinical condition and needs.

Treatment should begin as soon as the first symptoms appear: mucus, cough, loss of appetite. Also when there is a diagnosis of bronchiolitis, RSV, pneumonia or bronchitis. If in doubt, always check with your paediatrician.

  • Very acute respiratory failure with low oxygen saturation
  • High fever
  • Pulmonary haemorrhage
  • Oesophageal atresia

The number of sessions will depend on the child’s current condition and how their illness evolves.

We work from a preventive standpoint, so we can assess your child and their motor skills from the first month of life.

We work with you to make sure your child’s motor development is on track and give you guidance and advice to achieve it.

If there is any difficulty, we support you throughout the whole process so that, through techniques and exercises carried out in clinic and reinforced at home, we achieve optimal motor development.

Yes. Part of the treatment includes educating families, offering guidelines and recommendations for the child’s daily care.
